The Northern Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of New Zealand Championship Show

Saturday 16th March 2019

I would like to thank the officers and committee of the NSBT Club of New Zealand for giving me the opportunity of judging their championship show.  It was a great privilege and honour to be invited.  The show was well organised and ran very smoothly.  Much appreciation also goes to Mark Anderson, my steward, for keeping the ring ticking over.  Our gratitude should be extended to everyone involved with looking after us whilst we were in New Zealand which made our stay second to none.  The biggest thanks must go to all the exhibitors for allowing me to assess your dogs and for supporting the club.  It was a very enjoyable experience that will stay with me for a long time to come and provide many good memories.

DOGS

Baby Puppy Dog  (1)

1   Marret's RENEGADE FLASH FOR TAKODA

Black/brindle with white on chest, four months of age and showing nice overall balance, nothing overdone.  Pleasing skull and muzzle proportions, nice stop and clean enough in lip, dark eyes and well-placed ears.  Straight legs and good drop of brisket, feet could be a little more compact.  Very good front quarter construction with pleasing bone length and angulation.  Rear quarters are a touch over-angulated.  A little erratic on the move, at this stage, but this will hopefully settle down.  Best Baby Puppy in Show

Puppy Dog  (4) (2 ABS)

1   Gill's ANEVAY RETURN OF THE KING

Black/brindle with white chest of a standard size and a little more mature than 2.  Good strength to the head and of decent shape, distinct stop and correct length of muzzle but would have liked slightly cleaner in lip.  Ears well-carried and correct bite.  Nice straight front, legs have ample substance, brisket is level with the elbow.  Front and rear angulations are quite good which produced a pleasing gait.  Best Puppy in Show

2   Meredith's ROJEME MAKE MINE A TRIPLE TREV

Black/brindle giving away over three months on 1 and is a little longer cast.  Scored over 1 on head shape, has more length to the skull, nice stop and balanced muzzle.  Strong underjaw and dark eyes.  Clean enough in neck and front, not the front quarter angulation of 1.  Well-padded feet and correct hock placement, low tail set.

Junior Dog  (4) (1 AB)

1 Gill's ANEVAY FLYING SOLO

Well-balanced brindle with a lovely head shape, good width and depth, stop flows into a balanced foreface that is clean and houses correct dentition.  Dark eyes and very neat well-placed ears enhance the expression.  Straight well-boned front of ample width, feet ok and brisket level with the elbow.  Pleased with both front and rear quarter construction which showed in the flowing movement.  Well-placed straight hocks and short, close coat.  Would liked to have seen him in a more defined condition but a good dog nonetheless.  Pleased to award him RCC.  Well done.

2   Martel's CH. LIDABY THE LONE RANGER

White that is stronger throughout and more compact than 1.  Broad deep-through skull with distinct stop and short muzzle, large nostrils, dark eyes and well-placed neat ears.  Typical expression.  Powerful neck and shoulders, straight well-boned front of good width.  Deep brisket.  Lacked the upper arm length and angulation of 1 which showed in movement and which had a bearing on his placing.  Pleasing body shape, sound rear quarters and low tail set.  Overall more defined body condition than 1.

3 Nicholson's TAKODA WISH MASTER

Black/brindle of good overall substance.  Short skull, broad and deep through and good muzzle length.  Round eyes but ears carried a little high.  Strong shoulders but not as clean in front as 1 and 2.  Tidy feet and deep brisket.  Good rear quarters with nice bend of stifle and well-positioned straight hocks.  Decent body definition and slope to the croup.  Good drive from the rear.  Lost out on front angulation and front movement.

Intermediate Dog  (1)

1   Butcher's ANEVAY ONE N ONLY

Black/brindle who was a little longer cast for his height which threw his overall balance.  Good head and foreface proportions, pleasing stop and dentition and strong underjaw, liked his expression.  Well-boned front of ample width, feet ok with solid black nails and brisket sits just below the elbow.  Well-angulated rear quarters.  Short, close coat.  Movement ok.

NZ Bred Dog  (4)

1   Pilawa's SHADOWSTAFF DIAMOND AL

Red with black mask that showed clean lines all round and shows balance in most areas.  Pleasing head shape and possesses a balanced foreface housing a correct bite.  Very neat ears, dark eye and good stop provide a lovely expression.  Clean in neck and shoulders.  Good width to the front, brisket is level with the elbow, nice close coat.  Just lacked angulation front and rear but being compatible produced satisfactory movement with a topline held. Put down in good condition.

2   Slade's ANEVAY KING OF KINGS

White with black head markings and stronger right through than 1.  Good length, width and depth to the skull.  Strong muzzle, good stop and large nostrils.  Liked his expression.  Dark eyes and neat well-carried ears.  Straight, well-boned front, deep brisket and well-defined body.  Slightly over angulated in rear quarters which showed in his movement.

3   Martel's CH. LIDABY DARK KNIGHT RISES

Black/brindle with white on chest.  Short, deep through, broad skull, distinct stop and short muzzle housing good dentition.  Dark eyes and good ear carriage.  Straight, well-boned wide front with decent feet.  Deep brisket, lacked angulation in front compared to 1 and 2 but had good slope to the croup and well-placed, straight hocks which scored over 2.  Lost out on overall movement.

Veteran Dog  (3)

1   New's SPR CH & SPL GR CH ROJEME POP GUN

Dark brindle heading for 11 years old and of good proportions throughout.  Decent, clean head, dark enough eye, neat ear carriage, balanced muzzle housing good teeth of good size.  Straight, well-boned front.  Good front and rear quarters, balanced construction which showed in his movement holding the topline.

2   Baars & Nicol-Baars' CH. DACAHO ABOUT TO ROCK

8 year old black/brindle with white on neck and chest, very similar type to 1 but longer cast.  Lovely head shape, neat well-carried ears, balanced muzzle ratio, correct bite, large nostrils and pleasing expression.  Straight wide front, not quite the front angulation of 1.  Sound rear construction with a decent turn of stifle.  Moved quite well.

3   Croft & Clay's CH. WESTWOOD AMARILLA MOONSHINE

7 year old brindle who impressed me with his movement due to his compatible front and rear quarter conformation.  Dark enough in eye, tidy ears, typical expression.  Strong, deep through head with balanced muzzle length.  Well-boned straight front.  Lost out to 1 and 2 by carrying too much weight.

Open Dog  (4)

1   Marret's CH. TAKODA MASTERMIND

Eye-catching, powerful-looking black/brindle that shows good balance throughout and distinct lines from all angles.  Put down in good condition showing pleasing body definition.  Strong head of good shape, well-carried neat ears, dark eye and correct slope to the stop.  Satisfactory foreface ratio and alert expression.  Clean neck and shoulder line.  Straight well-boned front, feet could be tighter and black nails.  Brisket is level with the elbow, well-ribbed back, showing a tuck-up and a waistline when viewed from above.  Decent angulations front and rear which showed in his free-flowing movement.  Quality dog.  Pleased to award him DCC and later BIS.

2   Looker's NZ & AUST CH HIGHBOURNE ENTREPENEUR (IMP AUST)

Black/brindle and white and more of him all over than 1.  Different head shape than 1, broad deep through, distinct stop and short muzzle all provide a typical expression.  Good underjaw, clean tapered neck, strong shoulder line.  Straight well-boned front and good feet.  Pleasing construction of quarters, brisket is just below the elbow, liked his body shape.  Well-positioned straight hocks.  Another good dog.  Preferred head shape and rear movement on 1.

3   Martel's LIDABY THE-TASKMASTER

Another black/brindle and white dog of good substance and proportions throughout.  Strong in head of ample size, good incline to the stop, short muzzle and good underjaw.  Lovely straight, well-boned front of good width.  Lacked a little length of upper arm and front angulation which showed in his movement.  Sound rear quarters with good hock placement provided drive when moving.  Not in the condition of 1 and 2.

BITCHES

Baby Puppy Bitch  (1)

1   Pilawa's GOLDENCROSS SHUGGAH BABE OF SHADOWSTAFF

Compact white of 14 weeks of age and looking a promising prospect at this stage.  Good size and substance.  Pleasing head shape, very clean muzzle, neat enough ears, dark round eyes and lovely expression.  Clean shoulder line and front, decent feet, good bend of stifle and low tail set.  Moved very well from the rear.

Puppy Bitch  (6) (1 AB)

1   Harris' GYPARRIS TALKN BOUT MY GIRL

Black/brindle just short of 8 months showing clean lines from all angles and has good lift.  Nice head shape and proportionate foreface housing correct dentition.  Eye set good but could be a little darker, ears carried well and large nostrils.  Straight front, with good length of upper arm, pleasing body shape.  She is a little straight in the rear but produced quite fluid movement.  Pleasing overall picture.

2   Butcher's ANEVAY QUEEN BEE

Black/brindle with white on chest of 11 months.  Stronger right through than 1 but is long cast for her height with spoilt her in profile.  Strong head and of good shape showing length to the skull and depth, nice incline to the stop, balanced length to the muzzle with correct dentition.  Neat ears and dark eyes, well-boned front but slightly pinched and deep brisket.  Sound enough in rear quarters.  Moved quite well holding the topline.  Carrying more weight than 1.

3   Ryder's WESTWOOD FLEETING-GLIMPSE

Compact brindle with a short, deep through skull, distinct stop and short muzzle.  Scored over 1 and 2 with a strong underjaw.  Dark eye with well-carried neat ears, short strong neck.  Straight wide front and decent feet.  Lacked a little angulation in front quarters which was evident in her movement.  Sound enough in rear construction with well-placed hocks.  Preferred head type on 1 and 2.

Junior Bitch  (2) (1 AB)

1   Marret's STRONGBUILT ALL EYES ON ME

Well-balanced blue that ticks a lot of boxes.  Shows decent front and rear quarter compatibility  although would liked to have seen more length of upper arm which showed in her movement.  Pleasing head shape that is clean with distinct stop and good muzzle length.  Clean enough in lip, dark eye and ears are small but carried a (touch) tiny bit high.  Clean neck and shoulder line, deep brisket, ample width to the front.  Feet could be tighter and, surprisingly, nails were predominantly black.  Good tuck-up and rear quarters with low tail set.

Intermediate Bitch  (3)

1   Nicholson's WESTWOOD ANNIE OAKLEY

Dark brindle with a lovely focused expression.  Nice length and shape to the skull, black in eye colour, well-carried neat ears, decent muzzle strength and good bite.  Clean tapered neck, strong shoulders, front ok, neat feet that turn out correctly and black nails.  Front and rear quarters have compatible construction which produced fluid movement, brisket just below the elbow.  Would liked to have seen her in better condition.

2   Aldous' USHERIN GLITZ N GLAMMER (IMP AUS)

Predominately white with brindle patches more compact than 1.  Neat overall package.  Nice sized head but shorter in skull than 1.  Distinct stop with short muzzle, very neat small rose ears, clean in lip, neck and shoulder line.  Front is straight and of good width, feet ok.  Lost out to 1 on length of upper arm and angulation which was visible in her front movement.  Body definition ok.  Sound enough in rear quarters.

3   Blackwood's BATTLEAXE STORM CHASER

Up to size black/brindle with a short, deep through broad head, pronounced stop and short, broad muzzle that could have been slightly cleaner.  Tidy enough ears and dark eyes.  Clean neck, muscular shoulders, well-boned front of good width, feet ok.  Brisket level with the elbow, shows decent body definition.  Good rear quarters.  Topline as level as 2.  Preferred head type on 1 and 2 but a lot to like about her.

NZ BRED BITCH  (4)

1   Marret's TAKODA LEATHER 'N' LACE

Brindle of good construction and proportions.  Strong, yet feminine, head of good shape and not overdone.  Foreface ratio is good with a strong underjaw.  Lovely neat well-placed ears and dark eyes enhanced her expression.  Neck tapers into strong shoulders, well-boned legs, front has good width, feet ok.  Impressed me with her front and rear quarter conformation.  Very good front angulation with good length to the upper arm complemented her rear structure which produced a fluid movement covering the ground well.  Brisket level with the elbow.  I would have liked to have seen her in better condition.  A quality bitch.  Pleased to award BCC and Reserve Best in Show.

2   Aldous' SPL GR CH ALDOUSHIRE FAIREST OF TH BALL

Quality black/brindle, not as strong as 1.  Nice sized head but not the shape of 1.  Short skull with a distinct stop and short muzzle that balances with the head.  Very neat ears and dark eyes add to an alert expression.  Correct bite.  Clean unexaggerated outline and overall body shape, straight front with brisket level with the elbow.  Lacked the length of upper arm and front angulation of 1.  Sound well-placed rear quarters with straight hocks, short in coupling.  Purposeful rear movement just not as fluid as 1 in front.  Very nice bitch.

3   Butcher's ANEVAY FIRE DANCER

Red/fawn with white on chest and greying around the muzzle.  Lovely clean lines from the front and in profile.  Beautiful head type, foreface ratio good although not as strong or broad as 2.  Clean lips and correct dentition, well-carried ears, dark eyes, straight in front.  Brisket is level with the elbow, feet need more padding.  Pleasing body shape, lost out to 1 and 2 on front and rear quarter conformation but her movement was fluid enough.

Veteran Bitch  (2)

1   Aldous' CH. ALDOUSHIRE BURLESQUE BABE

Impressive dark brindle with white on chest.  8 years old and still shows a pleasing outline and balance throughout.  Sound construction was evident in her movement producing a positive driving gait.  Quarter angulation good front and rear with good weight support through the limbs.  Liked her head and muzzle proportions.  Clean flews and strong underjaw, very neat ears, dark enough in eye, typical expression.  Straight front of good width, well-padded tight feet, brisket level with the elbow, showed tuck-up and body definition.  Pleased to award her RCC.

2   Aldous' NZ CH VALGLO BELLE OF THE BALL (IMP UK)

Black/brindle in her tenth year and mother to 1 that is shorter and deeper in head.  Distinct stop and short foreface with good underjaw, very neat well-carried ears.   Strong neck, clean shoulder line and front with good legs.  Liked the length of upper arm but did not have the front or rear angulation of 1.  Decent body properties for her age.  Moved ok.

Open Bitch  (5) (2 ABS)

1   Meredith's GR CH ROJEME BABY ITS A SCREAMER

Standard sized dark brindle with a strong but nice head shape, decent stop, dark well-set eyes, very neat ears, liked her expression.  Short foreface housing good teeth, strong in underjaw, would have preferred her cleaner in lip.  Straight well-boned front, deep brisket and ribs carry back well.  Strong rear quarters produced plenty of drive.  Topline held on the move.

2  Baars' CHALLENGER CHINA GIRL

Red/white with black mask that is a similar size to 1.  Feminine head of good size, correct stop, short balanced, clean muzzle, neat well-carried ears.  Clean neck and shoulders, straight front of good width and decent feet.  Deep brisket, sound rear quarters with well-placed hocks.  Moved ok.  Lost out to 1 on expression and front movement.

3   McOnie-Perfect & Aldous's CH ALDOUSHIRE GOT THE FORCE

Predominantly white with brindle patches that is stronger right through than 1 and 2.  Powerful head, broad and deep through, prominent stop and short muzzle housing good teeth.  Neat ears and carriage, typical expression.  Strong tapered neck, straight wide front, brisket sits just below the elbow, short in coupling and low tail set.  Lacks front and rear angulation but are compatible which enabled her to produce decent movement.
